MANY UNEXPECTED FAILURES TO FOLLOW THROUGH AND HONOR AGREEMENTS DIMINISHED MY LIFE, CREATING A LOT OF POVERTY AND HORRIBLE WORKING CONDITIONS.
AT THE CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILROAD, AGREEMENTS TO WORK IN 1963, AT A SPECIFIC EMPLOYMENT WERE BROKEN. I SIGNED UP FOR SURVEY WORK AND I WAS SENT TO A CEMENT GROUTING GANG INSTEAD.
TWO YEARS IN A ROW, BETWEEN UNIVERSITY SEMESTERS,I WAS PROMISED, BY THE CNR RECRUITER, TO HAVE MOTEL ACCOMMODATION AND RESTAURANT MEALS PROVIDED AT NO COST TO ME AND I WAS PROVIDED ACCOMMODATION IN BUNK CARS INSTEAD.

I HAD BEEN PENNILESS AT UNIVERSITY AND I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING RESTAURANT MEALS, I HAD NEVER HAD THEM AND I WAS DROOLING AT THE PROSPECT OF PAID FOR RESTAURANT MEALS A MOTEL ROOM AND SMALL TOWN GIRLS. IN NEW BRUNSWICK, IN 1963, EVERY MAIN STREET HAD A MOVIE THEATER. I HAD ONLY BEEN TO A MOVIE THEATER ONCE.
NOTHING PREPARED ME FOR BEING DENIED MY PAID FOR EVERY CHEQUE
WHAT WAS EVEN MORE UNBELIEVABLE WAS THAT I, 24 YEARS OLD WITH 7 YEARS AS A CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILROAD EMPLOYEE HAD AN APPOINTMENT AT THE UNION OFFICE WITH THE UNION REPRESENTATIVES AND THEY TOLD ME
THEY WERE GOING TO "SIT THIS ONE OUT", "THIS ONE" BEING MY REQUEST FOR AID TO OBTAIN MY OUT OF WORK INSURANCE. I WAS A THIRD GENERATION CNR EMPLOYEE, THIS BEHAVIOR WAS UNHEARD OF AT CANADIAN NATIONAL.
